How to choose images that make your Wix website shine

When it comes to websites, first impressions count. Fonts, colours and layout all play a role, but the real magic often lies in the images you choose. The right visuals can make your website feel polished, professional and memorable, while the wrong ones can cheapen your brand instantly. At The Help Room, we specialise in building beautiful, functional Wix sites, and one of the most common conversations we have with our clients is about images. Here’s how to get it right, without the headache!

1. Choose Website Images That Feel Like You

Your Wix website is your online shopfront. Would you put random, unrelated posters up in your window? Probably not. The same goes for your site. Use images that reflect your brand’s personality, your services, and the mood you want customers to feel.

Real photos of you, your team, your space or your products nearly always beat anything staged. Even a well-lit phone shot can feel more genuine than a too-perfect stock photo.

2. Stock Photos: Friend or Foe?

Ah, stock photos. They can be a lifesaver, but also a curse. We’ve all seen the same “smiling woman typing on a laptop with a cup of tea and a plant on her desk” across a dozen sites. Overused stock photos can make your business feel generic.

If you do go the stock photo route, choose wisely. Look for natural lighting, relaxed poses and images that don’t scream “stock.” Bonus points if they match your brand’s colours and style. Also, think about paying for a really good image or two – a few dollars is often enough to make you stand out from the crowd.

3. Where to Find the Good Stuff.

If stock photos are the way for you, below are a few sites that are worth a look:

  • iStock | polished and professional (but paid)

  • Unsplash | free, stylish and modern (but also some great paid images)

  • Creative Market | unique bundles with a more “designed” feel (you’ll really stand out from the crowd)

But remember to sprinkle stock sparingly. Think of it as garnish, not the main dish.

4. Mobile Matters

More than half of your visitors will see your site on a phone (actually, way more than half most likely). What looks great on your laptop might crop awkwardly on a smaller screen. Before you fall in love with an image, test it on mobile. Does it still work when cropped? Can you still read any text over it? If not, it’s not the one.

5. Size Does Count for Wix Website Images

Images that are too small look fuzzy. Images that are too big slow your site to a crawl, and nobody’s got patience for that. Importantly, Google also doesn’t like it, and nobody wants to get on the wrong side of Google, do we? As a guide:

  • Hero images: 2000px wide is a safe bet.

  • Supporting images: 1200px wide usually does the trick.

Always compress your images before uploading to your Wix website.

6. Less is More

Whilst it’s tempting to add every photo you’ve ever taken, when it comes to your website restraint is your friend. Too many images can overwhelm visitors. Too few can make your site feel bare. Aim for:

  • One strong hero image every few pages

  • Supporting images every 2–3 sections

  • Galleries only where they add real value

Think of your site as a magazine, not a photo album.

7. The Hero Image: Your Website’s Opening Act

Your hero image is the first thing visitors see – it’s your showpiece. Get it right, and people will want to stick around. Get it wrong, and they’ll click away faster than you can say “bounce rate.”

Choose something that instantly tells your story. A massage therapist might show their calming space. A café could feature a steaming cup of coffee that makes you wish you had one in your hand. A dog walker could have … a pack of dogs? Remember to keep it uncluttered and let it set the tone for everything else.

Before you hit Publish …

Your website is more than words on a screen; it’s a complete user experience. The images you choose can either elevate that experience or drag it down. When in doubt, keep it simple, keep it authentic, and keep it “you.”

At The Help Room, we help businesses create websites that not only look good but feel right. We’ll help you pick images that make your site as welcoming as your business itself.
